ASSESSMENT & THERAPY

Speech Therapist

Articulation errors are when a child is unable to place their mouth, tongue, teeth and lips in the right place to make the correct sound. A common example of an articulation error is a lisp. Phonological patterns are common errors or substitutions that a child may use as they learn to speak. As a child gets older, these patterns disappear. Some children may have 'phonological sound delays or disorders' meaning that their errors have not resolved when it is expected to. Your therapist will complete a full assessment to work out the best therapy approach for your child.

Expressive language is how you communicate your needs, wants and interests through verbal and non-verbal ways. Some examples of expressive language include talking, pointing, showing and writing. Receptive language is your ability to understand and interpret what someone is saying or what you are reading. This includes your understanding of different words and grammar. Your therapist will complete a full assessment and plan therapy according to your child's language difficulties and age.

Stuttering is a difference in speech that disrupts a person's flow or rhythm of speech. There are different types of stutters including: * Repetitions (e.g. I-I-I-I want icecream) * Prolongations (e.g. mmmummy) * Blocks (when it is difficult to get any sound or word out) You may notice secondary behaviours such as excessive blinking, lip tremors or body movements. Your therapist can see if your child is stuttering, offer treatment options, and share information for you and your family.

Neurodiversity is the understanding that people's brains work differently, resulting in unique ways of thinking, learning and understanding. It acknowledges differences such as autism, ADHD and dyslexia as variations in brain function rather than disorders, highlighting the importance and value of this diversity in our society. At Little Speech Corner, we provide comprehensive Speech Pathology assessments and reports to support diagnoses. We also help children build self-advocacy skills and offer referrals for ongoing support based on their individual needs.

Literacy is more than just reading and writing, it’s the ability to understand, use and communicate with language effectively. It starts early with preliteracy skills like recognizing sounds, understanding stories, and learning letters, which lay the foundation for confident reading and writing later on. At Little Speech Corner, we support children’s literacy development using evidence-based programs like Sounds-Write, tailored to each child’s unique needs to help them build reading, spelling, and communication skills.
